"Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ."
St. Jerome by Caravaggio |
The 4 men's Bible Studies that I've been facilitating have been a great joy in the past few weeks this semester. With a handful to half a dozen men in each study, we've been discussing St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians, and it's been humbling and awesome to see the guys draw the parallels between the brokenness of ancient Corinth and the state of the culture on the college campus.
1 Corinthians 1: 22 - 26 |
"For Jews demand signs, and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God [...] Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise..."
It has been amazing to see these men look beyond the brokenness that Paul illumines in both themselves and the Corinthians to find the real meaning of the letter, and the transforming power of hope in the Love of Christ - even in a culture that cannot understand it, much like their campus.
Pray for these men, especially one named John Klarmann who has decided to not only attend Bible study, but begin one with the floormates in his dorm building - many of whom aren't even Catholic!
